The tension in the room was so thick, not even a Ginsu knife could cut through it. The beads of sweat hung permanently fixed to the brows of each panel member. Not one was immune to such effects stemming from such a heavy responsibility. Lesser humans would indeed crumble under the sheer pressure of selecting honorees for the 5th Annual Silicon Valley Small Theatre Awards, but this assemblage of illustrious, qualified experts faced their challenge with the courage and determination of Hercules. The words “bring it” echoed eerily as the session commenced. The bouncer “Biff” stood guard ensuring the deliberation was cloaked in the utmost secrecy. How to choose? Who to honor? Such talent! Such art! And then at the close of hour 13, an envelope was produced. THE envelope. The contents of this envelope, you ask? The list of honorees you see here. No Holidays Here! It’s Almost Labor Day – Time to get to work.

The Labor Day holiday is here. For anyone out of work and looking for a job, it’s time to kick the job search into high gear.

You wouldn’t be wasting an ounce of energy if you began your job search either before or in the couple of weeks following Labor Day. The holiday is a kind of a psychological crossroads for most organizations. The weekend marks the unofficial end of summer. It’s also the time companies rev up for the fall and winter months.

September is traditionally a time of change, growth and optimism, says Jeff Garton, president of a career-coaching firm Career Contentment. “People are ready to get back to work after Labor Day. And companies are ready to hire.”

Mike Principe, a principal at HR Staffing Solutions Inc. agrees. “This is the period when decision-makers are back from vacations and beginning to beef up their staffs, replacing employees who quit their jobs either before or after the Labor Day weekend and hiring new ones.”

HR professionals and headhunters have traditionally touted the beginning of the new year and Labor Day as the two best times to look for a new job. Principe believes that the weeks following Labor Day are the best time to change jobs. “Sixty percent of my business is done between Labor Day and Christmas,” he says.

Principe’s niche is staffing government contractors. Regardless of the economic climate, he says, government contractors are always busy.

While government contract spending inches up each year, the federal government expects to trim staff in 2009, outsourcing more work to large and small contractors.

“Good or bad times, government contracting never goes away,” Principe explains.

Contracts are traditionally awarded on Oct. 1, the beginning of the fiscal year. “This is why the Labor Day period is a fantastic time to look for a new job,” Principe says. “Companies often win contracts during July and August, and if you happen to apply for a job in early September, your timing couldn’t be better.”

It’s much easier to get hired by a government contractor than it is by a government agency, Principe says. At a minimum, the time it takes for the federal government to fill an open position is three months, “but the average is closer to nine months,” says Principe. “In the private sector it’s typically a six-week hiring cycle. And if a government contractor is desperate to fill a job, it’s often as fast as two weeks.”

As soon as contracts are awarded, companies don’t waste any time hiring.

“There is always a great deal of excitement when contracts are awarded,” says Principe. “Contractors need to hire people quickly so they can get to work immediately.”

Garton points to healthcare and information technology as two areas that offer better-than-average prospects for jobseekers, despite the sluggish economy.

It’s hard to find a health-care specialty that’s not shorthanded. Healthcare providers need registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, pharmacists, massage therapists, dental assistants and occupational and physical therapists, says Garton. “You don’t have to be a science and math whiz to get in on the action,” he adds. “The sprawling health-care industry desperately needs non-medical types to deal with records, billing and a host of administrative functions.”

The demand for IT specialists so strong that David Voloto, chief operating officer at IT search firm Bradford & Galt Inc., says he’s never observed any seasonality in hiring IT people. “Demand remains high for many IT skill sets, especially business analysts and software developers, particularly Java and .net developers.”

This Labor Day period is also an excellent time to try to connect with headhunters, adds Principe. While headhunters don’t take calls or answer e-mails from job candidates, it doesn’t hurt to take a chance and contact them anyway.

Just because headhunters don’t respond to most inquiries doesn’t mean they don’t skim their e-mails or letters. If they happen to be searching for your particular skill, count on their calling you.

Principe points out that executive recruiters tend to thrive during slow economies. Rather than hire full-timers, companies are likely to hire temporary staffers and independent consultants who’ll work on a short-term contract basis.

“Traditional recruiters find people for jobs, not jobs for people,” says Principe. “Nevertheless, it doesn’t hurt to stay in our sights by putting yourself where we can find you. For example, make sure your resume is on popular job boards and Web sites.

Take the hint and do everything you can be to be visible to virtually anyone remotely connected to the jobs you’re after.

Boot Camp Work Outs: What to Expect

Frequently scheduled in the pre-work hours when the sun is just rising, boot camp programs put fitness enthusiasts through a rigorous circuit of military-style drills.

“Boot camp is a fantastic way to get in shape for so many reasons,” says Kelli Calabrese, a clinical exercise physiologist and international master trainer for Adventure Boot Camp, part of the largest boot camp program in the world, weighs in on why it’s worth getting up early.. “It incorporates all types of conditioning, including cardiovascular, muscular strength, muscular endurance, speed, agility, quickness, balance, plyometrics, flexibility, interval training, obstacle courses and occasionally competitive individual or team games. The workouts are so diverse that campers never feel bored or reach the dreaded plateau.”

In a four week program, participants typically lose an average of four to 12 pounds, as well as two- to five-percent body fat and up to 12 inches off their combined chest, waist, hip, thigh and arm measurements, Calabrese says. They also improve their timed mile by a minute, on average, and some campers double their push-ups. Depending on the person and workout, a 60-minute boot camp session will burn between 450 and 600 calories.

Campers can also expect to improve their blood pressure, cholesterol, immune system, brain function, hormone levels, bone health, muscular strength, lung capacity and all markers of health including homocystine, red and white blood cells, c-reactive protein, thyroid, blood sugar and more, Calabrese says.

It’s a tough workout, but most programs have options for every level and ability. “Military boot camps have the stigma of being hardcore and possibly even humiliating,” notes Calabrese. “But fitness boot camps are supportive, fun and progressive in intensity. No one ever comes in ‘last.’”

Although the various components of a boot camp workout can vary depending on what the entire plan is for the week, a typical class consists of a five minute warm-up, 12 to 20 minutes of cardio, 20 minutes of muscle conditioning and five minutes of stretching, Calabrese says. The benefit of attending an official class is the extra motivation you’ll get from the instructor and fellow recruits to push performance to the max.

There’s way more to the raw food movement than carrots and celery sticks.

Raw food is hot – figuratively speaking, of course. Maybe you’ve only recently noticed the “raw” aisle at your local Whole Foods Market, loaded with bags of snacks that boast “live” contents. Maybe you’ve heard friends chatting about “raw food diets” and imagined them subsisting on apple slices and nonroasted almonds. Or perhaps you’ve even noticed a raw item or two on café menus. Either way, there’s no denying that the raw food movement is slowly sliding into the cuisine mainstream.

So what exactly do raw foodies eat? In short, a lot of vegetables, seeds and nuts, none of which can be cooked over about 116 degrees Fahrenheit. “Raw, live food is food that hasn’t been heated above 118 degrees – some say 120, others say 115,” explains local raw food proponent Patti Searle, founder and chef of Thrivin’ Edibles (www.thrivinedibles.com). Besides preparing and delivering raw meals and snacks to South Bay residents, Thrivin’ Edibles produces a line of HuuRaw savory chips that is available at many local grocery stores.

Searle became a raw food fan upon discovering it at a health retreat. After two weeks on a raw regime, she says she not only had more energy, and clearer skin, but lost 15 pounds without effort. Then “I came home and kept eating raw, and lost another 15 pounds in 30 days,” recalls Searle.

The big advantage to raw food, its advocates assert, is that food contains enzymes that are destroyed when heated over about 115 degrees F, and that many vitamins and minerals in food are also destroyed during the cooking process. “The prevailing thought is that anything over 130 degrees definitely destroys all the enzymatic action. And it’s the enzymes in food that actually help your body digest it,” Searle explains. “When you kill those by heating it too high (and 130 degrees is actually a really low temperature), your body has to work really hard to digest the food – and over 130 degrees, you start destroying vitamins and minerals. That’s the thought behind ‘why raw, why live?’ – you keep all that alive.”

While scientists often refute these claims, raw food fans clearly seem to be the picture of health, reporting increased energy, improved digestion, mental clarity, glowing skin, and all-around good health. “I feel good, I am over 50 and I don’t take any medication at all,” Searle reveals. “And it cut all my menopausal symptoms completely.” Some believe the diet can also help prevent cancers, heart disease, and other more serious illnesses.
The raw tag can often be misleading, in the sense that while they aren’t cooked, foods can be dehydrated – which means products such as bread and cookies can still be made “raw.” It just takes time. “We dehydrate the cookies, and other desserts,” Searle explains. “Typically it takes 12-24 hours.” Bowls of raw soup, too, aren’t exactly hot and steaming. “Heating them above 120 degrees does sort of ruin the point of eating raw,” she notes. “Now, if someone were to put the soup in a dehydrator, covered, before eating it, that would warm it gently, which would then keep the soup live.”

Having already worked as a chef in what she refers to as the “cooking world” while in her 20s, Searle learned the tricks of the raw cooking trade by taking a course at the Living Light Culinary Arts Institute in Fort Bragg, Calif., something of a learning mecca for raw gourmands. In November 2006, she began preparing raw meals under the Thrivin’ Edibles banner for a few friends. Via word of mouth, Thrivin’ Edibles now delivers meals to about 200 people three times a week. The company also caters events, and has plans to develop further lines for retail sale, including raw/vegan Patti’s Patties. Searle also hopes to have her raw cuisine served a la carte in delis and cafés.

Searle’s food delivery business is tailor-made for people who want to go raw but lack the inclination to do all the food prep required. She’s fond of quoting Santa Monica raw chef Matt Amsden, who quips “We don’t cook so you don’t have to.” But while going raw is what she calls a “total paradigm shift,” Searle is quick to point out that maintaining a raw diet is not as difficult or finicky as people imagine. “One of my clients said, ‘All that shopping and all that chopping, I don’t wanna do that,’” she laughs, though she adds that except for dehydrated items, raw food does not take any more time to prepare than cooked meals. “As a matter of fact, they take less because you just make them and then eat them. You don’t need to wait 15 minutes or three hours for them to cook.”

If a diet consisting largely of raw nuts, seeds and vegetable matter sounds bland, restrictive, even monastic, a quick scan of Searle’s list of raw cuisine reveals otherwise: Oriental noodle delight (the noodles are made using scallions, cabbage, celery, red peppers and bean sprouts); crimini mushrooms stuffed with walnut tomato pâté; pad thai (again, noodles come in vegetable form; here it’s zucchini and cucumber); a spinach and cashew quiche layered with ribbons of red bell peppers and carrots; zucchini, rosemary and onion bread – the delicious list of options goes on.

And if you think that raw food equals dessert deprivation, think again: a selection of brownies, cookies, mousses, puddings and cakes are sweet (thanks to agave nectar), chocolaty (courtesy of raw cacao) and perfectly indulgent. Now that’s hot.

The weekly trip to the farmers market is becoming a popular pastime here in Silicon Valley. Instead of fluorescent, air-conditioned supermarket aisles, more and more people are stocking their pantries, refrigerators and fruit bowls with food trucked in that morning from nearby farms. There’s something inherently satisfying about meeting the farmer who grew the beans you plan on serving with that evening’s dinner, or the rancher who lovingly raised the grass-fed cow that’s providing healthy, hormone-free beef.

Here’s just a sample of some of the many nearby farmers selling their wares locally at weekend farmers markets.

Live Earth Farm (Watsonville)

This small, family-owned, organic farm located in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains was started in 1995 by Tom and Constance Broz, with the support of many friends and volunteers. In addition to a comprehensive CSA (community supported agriculture) weekly delivery program, the farm often sells fruit and vegetables at the Los Gatos farmers market. At this time of year, look out for their organically-grown apples, arugula, beets, eggplant, chard, green beans and even heirloom tomatoes.

They tell us that the historic Newton Pippins taste best when allowed to hang on the tree until mid-October, so now’s the time of year to stock up on this sweet, juicy variety.

The ambience at Parcel 104, the epicurean destination at Santa Clara’s stylish Marriott hotel, is not unlike that of a sleek, modern cruise ship: gleaming wood floors; low, glowing ceilings; and little lounge areas where people pool together for socializing. Like a cruise ship, Parcel 104 features a Captain’s Table, of sorts. It’s called the Chef’s Table, a dining area tucked into its own semi-private space where up to 12 patrons can enjoy the restaurant’s renowned farm-fresh regional fare – such as Pacific Ivory salmon in porcini cream, wild boar sausage, and organic lettuce drenched in eucalyptus honey.

Parcel 104’s Chef’s Table is one example of Silicon Valley’s hidden dining scene. Private dining rooms are “essentially like [your] own private restaurant,” explains Parcel 104’s private dining coordinator. Set apart from the main dining spaces, and often decorated with individual themes, these rooms allow groups of as small as two and as large as 75 privacy, quietude, personalized attention, and, if needed, audio/visual equipment.

Cupertino’s Alexander’s Steakhouse, which emphasizes the luxurious clubby steakhouse tradition with a décor of leather and wood – and two fireplaces – makes room for five private dining rooms, each with its own look. One of the most popular choices, says Alexander’s special events manager, is The Boardroom, an upstairs space that offers a view of the restaurant’s open kitchen, a plasma television, and its own restroom. The Boardroom “is our most unique room,” he says. “It’s really just a fun place to be. It puts people at ease and they can relax; they feel like they’re at home.”

The key elements in a private dining room’s appeal are the “dedicated service and the acknowledgement from the management and staff that you are a special guest,” says Parcel 104’s private dining coordinator. Fuki Sushi, in Palo Alto, for example, bows to the Japanese tradition of private dining with tatami rooms, private dining rooms separated by sliding rice screens and decorated with Ikebana and scrolls. Each room has a call button to summon servers. And at The Grill on The Alley in The Fairmont Hotel, private dining room customers can choose from different prix-fixe menus, including the four-course executive menu or the six-course wine dinner.

How much does all this personal attention cost? Private dining rooms range from $45 to $3,000. A small price to pay for your very own restaurant.

There are a handful of standard cocktails that you simply must know to host a successful, proper cocktail hour. And no, we’re not talking about preparing Jack and Cokes. Here’s a list of five classics to have in your arsenal:

Cosmopolitan, by Chris Schmauch

Cosmopolitan

1 1/2oz. citrus vodka

1oz. triple sec

1/2oz. fresh lime juice

Splash cranberry juice

Lemon twist for garnish

Combine vodka, triple sec, lime juice and cranberry juice in an ice-filled shaker. Shake vigorously for 20-30 seconds until cold. Strain into chilled cocktail glass and garnish.

2oz. fine bourbon

1oz. Carpano Antica sweet vermouth

Dash of Angostura bitters

Dash of orange bitters

3 brandied cherries for garnish

Combine all ingredients in an ice-filled cocktail shaker, stirring for 20-30 seconds until cold. Strain into chilled glass and add garnish.

Margarita

1 1/2oz. silver tequila

1/2oz. Cointreau

1/2oz. fresh lime juice

splash of simple syrup (optional)

Combine all the ingredients in an ice-filled cocktail shaker, shake until cold, strain into a chilled salt-rimmed cocktail glass.

2oz. gin

1/2oz. dry vermouth

Olive or lemon for garnish

Combine gin and vermouth in an ice-filled cocktail shaker and stir gently for 20-30 seconds until cold, strain and pour into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish.

Old-Fashioned

1 sugar cube

1 orange slice

2 dashes of Angostura bitters

1 1/2oz. bourbon

Muddle sugar with orange and bitters in a glass. Add ice, top with bourbon and stir to mix.

Stick with the meat and potatoes classics cooked on a showcase grill at this sophisticated steakhouse, or reward yourself with a tender, juicy slab of imported Kobe beef and a flight of chilled sake. But there’s more to why Alexander’s consistently snags top honors. A modern, minimalist interior with a clean, comfortable Japanese feel makes a serene backdrop for relaxed, long dinners, while succulent seafood dishes such as Lobster Dumplings and Main Lobster keep the taste buds of non-beef lovers equally happy.

The Grill’s location at the base of Downtown’s posh Fairmont Hotel, coupled with its proximity to the San Jose Museum of Art, make it a favorite among diners on both cultural and business outings. Inside, a ’40s Art Deco interior puts the emphasis on intimate, comfy booths (with lots of places to hang your coat – always appreciated). The Green Room offers clubby private dining for large groups, and the Wine Room sets forth a long formal table beneath an elegant copper ceiling, flanked by cases of fine vino. Patio seating at the front offers a view of the Carousal at holiday time. The menu, like the décor, focuses on American classics: New York steak, U.S. prime Tomahawk rib chop, pan-fried petrale sole, and chicken pot pie. The steaks will never disappoint, but our all-time favorite is the Meat Loaf.

Sundance the Steakhouse

Sundance certainly excels as a steakhouse – their signature prime rib is available in four different sizes, and other steaks are cut daily by the in-house butcher. Sundance vanquishes rivals as a destination restaurant; it’s the kind of place you go when you want to celebrate a promotion, mark an anniversary or impress an out-of-towner. The dimly lit, mahogany-paneled interior sets the vibe for quiet enjoyment. Pre-meal martinis and post-dessert ports are practically requirements, and anyone who isn’t crazy about steak can dive into a seafood menu that rivals any seaside bistro. At lunchtime, huge burgers and hearty French dip sandwiches round out an abbreviated menu of high-end comfort food. A wine list with more than 400 selections is constantly updated with global varietals.

Forbes Mill Steakhouse

Forbes Mill has a large menu of appetizer, entrée and dessert items, but you’ll want to zero in on the section featuring the meat that made this place famous: Beef. At the very least, Forbes proves that the phrase “melts in your mouth” is not a cliché. Anyone who has ever indulged in one of Forbes’ ribeyes, dry-aged New York strips, or filet mignons knows what we’re talking about. They also offer Kobe beef – technically, it’s 100 percent American Wagyu raised in Northern California, but under the same strict guidelines that define this exclusive type of Japanese meat. Each cow has been fed nothing but beer and corn for its entire life (while being hand-massaged in air conditioned pens). The resulting steak has a tender, buttery consistency that you simply won’t find in other cuts. The steaks are so good that many patrons will accidentally overlook the extensive wine list, as well as the large selection of salads and seafood entrees.
